Important Communication to All Medical Center People

To: All Medical Staff, Employees and Volunteers

From: Eugene Bauer, MD, Philip Pizzo, MD, Michael Peterson, Christopher Dawes

Date: September 12, 2001

Re: Response to National Emergency

Although a day has passed since the horrific tragedies on the East Coast, we know that the grieving and healing are just beginning for all of us. Our thoughts are with all those who have lost family members and friends. Remember, if you need to talk with someone about this crisis, counselors are available through the Stanford Help Center at 723-4577 (http://www.stanford.edu/dept/helpcenter).

As we listened to yesterday’s incidents unfold, we were reminded how precious life is and what an important role we all play in preserving that life. And we are proud of all Medical Center employees for continuing to provide the highest possible care and services despite their heavy hearts. Both hospitals remain fully staffed and have plenty of medical supplies on hand.

We are similarly touched by the outpouring of compassion from the community. The Stanford Blood Center was inundated with donors yesterday, and staff at the center are asking members of the public to make appointments today and later in the week to control the flow of donors.

Thank you for your continued compassion, dedication and concern for our patients and their families.

Important Communication to all Medical Center staff

From Mike Peterson, Chris Dawes and Dr. Philip Pizzo:

As you know, there was a series of suspected terrorist attacks this morning on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. There is a collective sense of shock and dismay that we all share. Nonetheless, we encourage you to remain calm in the face of this apparent national threat.

Both Stanford and Packard hospitals are currently functioning at normal levels. We have adequate beds and supplies on hand to manage our current patients and to accommodate an additional influx of patients, should that be necessary. It is very important that we continue to provide services to our patients and their families and therefore, all staff members are urged to remain at work throughout their regular shift. Similarly, we strongly encourage staff on evening shifts to report to work as planned in order to continue to provide service to our community.

We sympathize with staff members who may have loved ones on the East Coast and are concerned for their safety. Because this is a time of some anxiety, the chaplaincy service, social services staff and Help Center staff members are available to provide support to employees, as well as patients and families.

As of 1 p.m. today, according to the Palo Alto Police Department and all Bay Area media, all public transportation, bridges and highways remain open and are experiencing normal operations.

We will provide periodic updates as more information becomes available. We thank you for your patience and dedication.
